Ayurvedic Consultations

Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of medicine, emphasises a holistic approach to health, focusing on balancing the body, mind, and spirit.

It's more than just a physical examination; it also considers your mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The use of herbs in Ayurveda is a personalised process that considers a patient's unique constitution, lifestyle, and current state of health.

Key principles of Ayurvedic approaches:

  • Dosha assessment: Ayurveda identifies three primary doshas (energy types) – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Practitioners can tailor treatments by assessing a patient's dominant dosha or dosha imbalance.
  • Individualised treatment plans: Ayurvedic treatments are not one-size-fits-all. Treatment pathways are based on a patient's specific needs and constitution, considering factors such as age, diet, lifestyle, and current symptoms.
  • Emphasis on prevention: Ayurveda prioritises preventing illness through lifestyle modifications and dietary changes. Treatment pathways often include recommendations for healthy habits to maintain balance and prevent future imbalances.

Common Ayurvedic prescriptions:

  • Herbal remedies: Ayurveda uses herbs and plant-based products to address various health conditions. These may be administered as powders, decoctions, or herbal oils.
  • Diet and lifestyle recommendations: Ayurvedic practitioners often use specific dietary and lifestyle modifications to support healing and maintain balance. This may include recommendations for eating seasonal foods, practising yoga, and managing stress.

Important considerations:

  • Potential interactions: Ayurvedic herbs may interact with prescription medications or other supplements. It would help if you informed your GP about any Ayurvedic treatments you're considering.
  • Safety and efficacy: While Ayurveda has a long history of use, it's essential to be aware of potential side effects and to choose reputable sources for Ayurvedic products.
